Jurgis Kubilius (b. 1998) is a Lithuanian multidisciplinary composer and public speaker whose work embodies the Hermes archetype—bridging conceptualism and experience with wit and curiosity. He graduated from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (2021) and from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (cum laude, 2025).

Jurgis Kubilius (b. 1998) is a Lithuanian multidisciplinary composer whose creative practice embodies the Hermes archetype: a mediator bridging conceptuality and experientiality, infused with paradoxes and humour. His work consistently explores contradictions and multi-layered meanings, synthesising diverse and seemingly incompatible elements into cohesive artistic experiences. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Composition at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (2017–2021). He completed his Master’s studies in Composition (cum laude) at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (2023–2025), where he studied with Richard Ayres and Maya Verlaak and researched the artistic potential of contradictions. His compositions have been performed in Lithuania, the Netherlands, Latvia, Germany, Luxembourg, France, Belgium, and the UK, at events and festivals such as the Bruckner Casco Festival, Opera Forward Festival at Dutch National Opera, and Thomas Mann Festival, among others. Awards include the Lithuanian Composers’ Union’s Young Composers Award (2023) and 1st prize at the Vox Juventutis Competition (2024). Jurgis is also active as a music publicist and concert/radio host.

He studied composition at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre with Professors Vaclovas Augustinas and Mārtiņš Viļums (2017–2021) and completed his Master’s studies cum laude at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Richard Ayres and Maya Verlaak (2023–2025).
His most recent projects include the interdisciplinary composition Ant00n-2.0, premiered at the Bruckner Casco Festival at the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, and nominated among the TOP15 compositions of 2024 by the Lithuanian Composers’ Union; his documentary fantasy Balso žinutės Sofijai (Voice Messages to Sofija), touring Lithuania in 2025, commemorates the 150th birth anniversary of Lithuanian composer and artist Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis.
Jurgis was awarded first prize for his experimental bacchanalian mini-oratorio VOXOXO#18, premiered at the 18th International Vox Juventutis Competition for Choral Music (2024). He also received the Lithuanian Composers’ Union’s Young Composers Award (2023), second prize at the St. Christopher Composers’ Competition for his string orchestra composition Perfectionism I (Imperfectionism) (2022), and several other prizes for choral compositions (2018, 2019).
His music has been performed in Lithuania, Latvia, Germany, Luxembourg, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and the United Kingdom. His works have featured in festivals such as the Bruckner Casco Festival, Opera Forward Festival, Thomas Mann Festival, Druskomanija, Iš Arti, and Kristupas Festival.
Jurgis has collaborated with the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society’s Čiurlionis Quartet, St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra, Kaunas String Quartet, Vilnius Municipality Chamber Choir Jauna Muzika, among others. His Piano Sonata, recorded by Lithuanian pianist Ieva Dūdaitė, was released on the Opus Klassik Award-nominated CD Inseparable (Ars Produktion, 2022).
In addition to composition, Jurgis writes concert reviews, critical essays, and interviews. His recent publications about the Bang on a Can Summer Festival Media Workshop appeared on the New York Public Radio new music portal New Sounds. In 2022, he received the Grand Prix at the New Opera Action (NOA) Young Analytics Workshop in Vilnius for two in-depth reviews of contemporary opera productions.
